Between the dramatic Tasman Sea and the unbroken chain of the Southern Alps is the West Coast. This narrow and often sparsely populated region in the South Island of New Zealand offers visitors a incomparable scenic wonderland filled with primeval forests, tranquil lakes, mountain ranges, rivers and advancing glaciers, all bordered by a wild and rugged coastline of sandy beaches and rocky headlands. In no other part of New Zealand is so much scenic diversity able to be so easily accessed and explored by visitors. Hokitika, originally a gold rush town settled by pioneers in the 1860s, is centrally located and ideally suited as a base for exploring the West Coast as well as being an overnight stop for those in transit. Attractions and ActivitiesMany of our guests arrive by car after driving long distances and are pleased to find that much of what Hokitika has to offer is only moments away by foot. There are crafts, shopping, banks, restaurants, a museum, heritage area and, of course, our wild and wonderful beach. After dark the glow worm dell is worth a visit and a great way to walk off that evening meal! Excellent day trips from Hokitika include the Fox and Franz Josef Glaciers, Paparoa National Park (including the renowned Pancake Rocks and blowholes) and the rugged and dramatic Arthurs Pass region.
