Tide Song B&B : Exploring the Taiharuru Estuary

The tranquil Taiharuru Estuary lies on the east coast of Northland, 25 minutes-drive from Whangarei City.

It's a peaceful rural area, which we enjoy sharing with guests. Tide Song 's 3 hectares include a large garden, some farm animals and native bush. There's an outdoor bath nestled amongst the tree ferns.

Activities include kayaking, sailing and fishing; with garden walks, cooking and music back on shore. Surf beaches, and hiking trails of different lengths are just a short drive away, as is the beautiful Whangarei Heads peninsula.

Sailing Jetty

Right in front of the house is our private jetty. The estuary is quite shallow with a sandy bottom and crystal clear water. In summer the sun heats the sand and the water gets beautifully warm. We have a floating pontoon in the deepest part of the estuary which swimmers can kayak or row out to.

Our sons, Simon and Bruce, are sailing the Tarka, an R Class skiff, probably built in the 1950s and now restored to near-original condition by Simon.

Paddling The Estuary

Kayaking is a popular pastime on the estuary. Ambitious paddlers can go for long trips, either down to the harbour entrance or upriver. If you're not so energetic, you can just drift with the current. Our kayaks are excellent for the inexperienced as they are very stable and unsinkable.
