Autumn A cooler spell of weather over the Easter break has brought the autumn colours in Wanaka. This is a favourite time of year for many of the locals - bright sunny days and cooler nights with the hint of winter on its way. A calm serenity surrounds the area with its magical lake setting lined by poplar trees. A favourite excursion is the hiking or bike track from town through Bremner Bay to Penrith Point and around to the Outlet where the Clutha river commences its journey to the coast. With a backdrop of snowcapped mountains, calm blue water and the autumn shades on trees lining the lake and river one has to claim that 'this is life the way it should be'. |

What a magic sight as we woke up on 17 June to see snow everywhere around Minaret Lodge, with further snow over the next couple of days providing the perfect start to the ski season. A wave on excitement went through town and it seemed everybody was suddenly heading into the ski and board shops to make sure they all had the right gear for opening day. And what a start to the ski season it was! Both Cardrona and Treble Cone opened on 22 June. We skied at Cardrona with great packed fresh powder on trails. The next day took us to Treble Cone where they had received a further 30cm of fresh snow over the weekend making it the best start to the season for ten years. powder conditions both on and off trail! By the end of the weekend, one was wishing that we should have paid a few visits to the gym or got out on the mountain bike a lot more in the months building up to opening! However after a few good soaks in our newly installed spa pool, we felt we could be tempted to get back to the slopes sometime in the following week! |
