Evening Derwent River Spring

When you arrive at Tynwald, whether it’s for a romantic weekend, a celebration dinner or a business conference, you’ll be welcomed personally by one of your hosts, Pat or Garry. That’s part of the 19th Century tradition of the home, and – more importantly – the much older tradition of true hospitality.

The home looks out over the kind of view that leaves visitors speechless. Only seeing it can do it justice. The huge, slow river, the red cliffs on the far side of the Derwent Valley, the mountains all around, the peacocks strutting in the English gardens: it's too much for the camera, the canvas or the casual glance. You have to take your time and enjoy it.

From the moment you arrive, Tynwald invites you to stay. From the moment you leave, it calls you back. If you thumb through the visitors’ book, you’ll read ‘We must come back’ – time and wistful time again. Tynwald was built early in the Nineteenth Century by John and Martha Terry as a celebration of success in the flour-milling industry. Much of its Victorian charm comes from a later owner: the politician William Moore in the 1890s added the central tower, the lacework verandahs and wide bay windows overlooking the spectacular views and gardens.

Spend a little time in the twenty-first century at the pace of life enjoyed by the wealthy in the Nineteenth. A romantic weekend with a special person? A getaway with business colleagues? You'll find the tranquillity of Tynwald perfect for either purpose.

Things To Do

If you'd like us to lay on a special event for you – boat trips, pony treks, tennis tournaments, medieval mysteries and musical soirees are some we have done in the past – just give us a call and see Tynwald hospitality at its best. Or you can entertain yourselves: fish for the world's best trout in the fishing season; play tennis on our court; go for a walk in the huge grounds of Tynwald; or go ‘twenty-first century’ and take a ride on a mountain bike or a swim in the heated pool.

Local Attractions

Tynwald is not far from anywhere. Close by are the Salmon Ponds or jet boat trips; a little further and you can walk in Mount Field National Park; in the opposite direction you can be sitting at a roulette table in just over half an hour. Richmond, Port Arthur, the Huon Valley, the lakes – all are within easy reach of Tynwald.
