Fremantle

Set on the Indian Ocean, Fremantle provides the fruits of the sea in its many restaurants, and the cuisine of many nationalities. Visitors love Fremantle's multiculturalism, art galleries, superb maritime museum and its picturesque Victorian architecture. Fothergills is the perfect setting from which to explore this vibrant centre, to relax at nearby beaches, or as a starting point for a tour of WA.

The Port of Fremantle has for long been called the Gateway to Australia, being the first port of call for post-war immigrants from Europe. The first free settlers arrived in 1829 but, because of an acute shortage of labour, convicts were sent to the colony from the 1850s. They set about building their own prison which is, today, a major heritage site. There are many historic buildings from this era: the old Commissariat Store is now the superb Maritime Museum, the famous old Gothic-style Asylum is now the Fremantle Art Centre.

In 1987 Fremantle was home to the first non-American defence of the America’s Cup. Today, the sea provides local delicacies for Fremantle’s many restaurants.
